Aeonium ‘Zwartkop BigBang’

Aeonium ‘Zwartkop Bigbang’

Origin:
Mutation of Aeonium ‘Zwartkop’.

Known names:
‘Big Bang’ (the most widely used name), ‘Zwartkop BigBang’. The latter is preferable because it clearly distinguishes this mutation from the many other Big Bang-type forms.

Creation / commercialization date:
Around 2020 in South Korea. The exact creation date remains to be confirmed.

Botanical description

Aeonium ‘Zwartkop BigBang’ is a shrubby variegated Aeonium that arose as a mutation of Aeonium ‘Zwartkop’.

It belongs to the group of aeoniums with a Big Bang-type mutation, characterized by numerous pigmented streaks and lines distributed irregularly across the foliage.

In ‘Zwartkop BigBang’, this feature is especially striking because of the very dark pigmentation inherited from ‘Zwartkop’. It is among the Big Bang forms with the most intense black markings.

An especially dark Big Bang pattern

In winter, when light levels are lower, the characteristic Big Bang streaks are generally less contrasted.

As light intensity increases, they gradually become more visible and pronounced.

The leaves then display an irregular network of black and very dark streaks, whose arrangement varies from one leaf to another. This random distribution is a defining feature of Big Bang-type aeoniums.

In ‘Zwartkop BigBang’, the contrast is especially strong because of the naturally dark coloring of its parent, ‘Zwartkop’.

This pigmentation can make some leaves appear almost black, placing this cultivar among the darkest forms in the Big Bang family.

Changes driven by light levels

As with many Big Bang-type mutations, expression of the pattern is strongly influenced by growing conditions.

In low light, the streaks may fade and become much less visible. Conversely, strong light promotes their expression and increases the contrast of the foliage.

This seasonal development can therefore alter the plant’s appearance considerably over the course of the year.

Gradual, suitable light exposure is preferable to artificially pursuing maximum color through excessive stress.

A relatively unstable cultivar

Aeonium ‘Zwartkop BigBang’ has moderate growth and a relatively low ability to produce offsets.

Its main horticultural characteristics are:

  • Growth: moderate;
  • Offset production: rather low;
  • Vigor: satisfactory;
  • Stability: moderate to low;
  • Sensitivities: none specifically observed at this stage.

Its main difficulty lies in its genetic stability.

Reversions are regularly observed in this cultivar. Some rosettes may gradually lose the mutation and become entirely green again.

These reversions are important to monitor, particularly during propagation. It is preferable to retain and multiply rosettes that correctly express the Big Bang pattern in order to preserve the desired characteristics.

Why prefer the name ‘Zwartkop BigBang’?

The term ‘Big Bang’ is widely used in the Aeonium world for mutations with characteristic streaking or marbling.

However, many different forms belong to this mutation type, sometimes arising from very different parents.

The name ‘Zwartkop BigBang’ immediately identifies the parent from which this mutation arose and avoids confusion with other Big Bang aeoniums.

This distinction is particularly important in collections, where several plants may circulate under the simple name ‘Big Bang’ despite representing separate mutations.

A Big Bang with a strong identity

Aeonium ‘Zwartkop BigBang’ combines two sought-after traits: the very dark foliage of ‘Zwartkop’ and the irregular pattern of Big Bang mutations.

Its main appeal lies in the intensity of its black streaks, which can become especially striking under sufficient light.

Its tendency to revert nevertheless requires attention. As with several unstable variegated aeoniums, observing and selecting offsets remains essential to preserve the Big Bang character over time.

Like all aeoniums, it is sensitive to frost and must be protected from subfreezing temperatures.
