Aeonium ‘Starry Sky’

Aeonium 'Starry Sky'

Origin:
Most likely derived from a mutation of the botanical Aeonium arboreum. This origin should be regarded as probable rather than definitively demonstrated because precise information about the mother plant and the mutation’s origin is unavailable.

Known names:
‘Starry Sky’ (the most widely used name), ‘Starry Sky Variegated’.

Creation / commercialization date:
Commercial release began around 2023 in China.

Botanical description

Aeonium ‘Starry Sky’ is a shrubby, variegated Aeonium that appears to share the general characteristics of the A. arboreum lineage.

It develops relatively slender stems bearing rosettes of long, narrow, and fairly flexible leaves.

Its habit can become quite distinctive with age: the stems tend to lengthen and the rosettes may begin to hang slightly, producing a silhouette very different from aeoniums with tightly compact rosettes.

Some growers therefore describe it as having a weeping habit, with stems that eventually arch under the weight of the rosettes.

Especially bright variegation

In winter, when light levels are lower, the foliage generally displays:

  • a narrow green central band;
  • two lateral areas ranging from creamy white to very pale yellow;
  • long, narrow leaves;
  • and fairly regular variegation that may vary from one leaf to another.

The combination of green and very pale areas gives the plant a particularly bright appearance.

Subtle seasonal color

As light intensity increases, the lateral areas may gradually develop yellow tones, while the margins can take on a slight pink tint.

The contrast generally remains subtler than in variegated aeoniums whose red pigments become very intense.

The green central band usually remains clearly visible, even under bright exposure.

This seasonal change is part of its appeal: ‘Starry Sky’ retains a luminous appearance while gradually developing warmer shades along the margins.

An Aeonium with a “weeping” habit

One of the most interesting features of ‘Starry Sky’ is its growth habit.

With age, the stems may lengthen and arch, causing the rosettes to hang downward. A specialized French nursery describes it as a “weeping aeonium” and also notes its bright, sunny appearance.

This habit can be especially attractive in a container, particularly when several stems hang around its sides.

It also helps distinguish ‘Starry Sky’ from other long-leaved variegated aeoniums.

Growth and offset production

Available observations indicate fairly active growth, which is noteworthy for a variegated Aeonium.

Its ability to produce offsets appears average.

Growth may naturally slow during very hot periods. Like other aeoniums, it favors the moderate temperatures associated with its most active growing season.

Still uncommon in cultivation

Although ‘Starry Sky’ is beginning to appear among several European growers, it remains relatively uncommon in collections.

Growing conditions

☀️ Light

Bright light is recommended to maintain well-defined variegation and encourage the development of yellow and pink tones.

Gradual acclimation is nevertheless preferable when a plant grown in shade is moved into intense direct sunlight.

💧 Watering

A very free-draining growing medium is recommended. As with other aeoniums, the roots should not remain in waterlogged soil for long periods.

Periods of intense heat may also slow growth. Watering should then be adjusted to the plant’s actual activity rather than following a fixed schedule.

🌡️ Heat

Available observations do not indicate any unusual heat sensitivity in ‘Starry Sky’. It is nevertheless best protected from extreme conditions combining very high temperatures, harsh sunlight, and a wet growing medium.

❄️ Cold

Like all aeoniums, ‘Starry Sky’ is not frost hardy. Subfreezing temperatures can cause serious damage, so the plant should be protected whenever temperatures fall below freezing.

A recent cultivar still being observed

Aeonium ‘Starry Sky’ is a recent cultivar with a distinctive place among variegated collections.

Its white, cream, and green variegation, long slender leaves, and especially its increasingly trailing habit give it a silhouette unlike that of many other aeoniums.

Its colors remain relatively subtle, with touches of yellow and pink appearing as light levels rise, but this restraint is part of its character.

Observations to date are encouraging, and the cultivar does not appear unusually fragile. Its description may evolve as longer-term cultivation experience becomes available.
