Aeonium ‘Sunburst’: Origin, Identity and Characteristics

sunburst

Origin:
Aeonium ‘Sunburst’ most likely originated as a mutation of Aeonium davidbramwellii. Long considered a variegated form of Aeonium decorum, its origin was re-evaluated thanks to botanical research conducted in the early 2000s. In 2002, the Huntington Botanic Garden indicated that ‘Sunburst’ did not originate from Aeonium decorum. This hypothesis was subsequently confirmed by Rudolf Schulz, who corrected this error in his book Aeonium in Habitat and Cultivation (2007, p. 152) by attributing its origin to Aeonium davidbramwellii.

Known names:
‘Sunburst’ (most common name), Aeonium davidbramwellii ‘Spreading Sun’, Copper Pinwheel, 灿烂.

In early horticultural publications, this variety was also marketed under the erroneous names Aeonium decorum ‘Tricolor’ and Aeonium decorum ‘Sunburst’, following a publication in the Cactus and Succulent Journal (65(2): 57, 74, March-April 1993).

Date of origin / Originator:
Origin and date of creation unknown. Cultivar already in cultivation before 1993.

Distinction:
🏆 Royal Horticultural Society – Award of Garden Merit (AGM), 2012.

Botanical description

The Aeonium ‘Sunburst’ is arguably one of the most famous variegated Aeoniums. Its elegance, robustness, and distinctive appearance have made it a staple in the world of Aeoniums.

Although it is very similar to its presumed parent, Aeonium davidbramwellii, it differs notably by its larger size and wider rosettes.

Over time, it forms a branching shrub capable of producing large rosettes that frequently exceed 20 to 30 cm in diameter, or even more under optimal conditions.

Remarkably stable variegation

One of the main qualities of the Aeonium ‘Sunburst’ lies in the remarkable stability of its foliage.

Regardless of the season, the pattern of its variegation changes very little. The leaves feature a broad green central band streaked with fine lines of chlorophyll, framed by wide creamy-white margins.

In bright light, the cream areas gradually take on a slight yellow tint, while the leaf margins develop a delicate pink edge that can turn red on the best-exposed specimens.

Unlike many modern cultivars whose colors change significantly with the seasons, ‘Sunburst’ maintains a very consistent appearance throughout the year, which contributes greatly to its popularity.

Cultivation and behavior

The Aeonium ‘Sunburst’ is a relatively easy variety to grow when provided with suitable conditions.

Its main horticultural characteristics are as follows:

  • Growth: moderate;
  • Offsetting ability: rather low;
  • Vigor: good;
  • Fragility: moderate.
  • Genetic stability : Excellent

Contrary to popular belief, this is not a particularly delicate variety. However, its large areas lacking chlorophyll make it more susceptible to scorching from excessive sunlight, especially during periods of intense summer heat.

The creamy margins can turn brown or black as a result.

To maintain the quality of its foliage, a bright spot sheltered from the scorching afternoon sun is generally recommended during the summer. A position in partial shade or one that receives morning sun often yields the best results.

Like all Aeoniums, it thrives in a free-draining growing medium and is sensitive to frost.

A must-have for any collection

For over thirty years, the Aeonium ‘Sunburst’ has remained one of the genus’s most iconic cultivars.

Its luminous foliage, remarkably stable variegation, and natural elegance have earned it international acclaim, culminating in the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Whether you are starting a collection or looking for classic cultivars, ‘Sunburst’ remains an essential choice.
