Anecdote about its history

The Aeonium ‘Zeus’ had a difficult start in the collector’s world, long overshadowed by the Aeonium ‘Poseidon’.

For several years, it suffered from a bad reputation mainly linked to marketing errors. Many copies sold as ‘Poseidon’ were in reality ‘Zeus’, which has led some enthusiasts to wrongly consider this cultivar as a simple replacement variety or an Aeonium of less interest.

This confusion has unfortunately delayed the recognition of its true qualities. Today, the Aeonium ‘Zeus’ is nevertheless considered a major cultivar, possessing its own characteristics and a unique aesthetic among the Aeoniums variegata.

Botanical description

The Aeonium ‘Zeus’ is a shrubby Aeonium variegata resulting from a mutation of Aeonium undulatum.

This is a particularly majestic cultivar, inheriting impressive growth and robust morphology from its botanical parent.

Over time it may exceed 1 meter high, or even more under favorable conditions. Its development is accompanied by a thick and powerful trunk, characteristic of Aeoniums from the line undulatum.

Its rosettes are imposing, made up of leaves:

wide;
long;
thick;
slightly wavy.

When cuttings are taken, the leaves may become temporarily soft and drooping. This phenomenon is perfectly normal: after rooting, the plant gradually regains a firmer leaf structure.

Cuttings of ‘Zeus’ also have excellent rooting capacity, which facilitates its multiplication.

Foliage with constant colors

One of the great qualities of the Aeonium ‘Zeus’ is its aesthetic stability throughout the seasons.

Its foliage combines three main colors:

a very marked central green;
a large creamy white area on the leaf margins;
a slight pink to red coloring on the margins.

The central green zone is particularly developed in ‘Zeus’. It occupies a significant surface area of the leaf and constitutes one of the elements allowing it to be differentiated from similar cultivars such as ‘Poseidon’.

Unlike certain Aeonium variegata whose colors change greatly depending on the seasons, ‘Zeus’ generally maintains its contrast all year round, which largely contributes to its ornamental interest.

Growth and seasonal behavior

Like its parent undulatum, the Aeonium ‘Zeus’ has vertical growth and a very particular architecture.

One of its remarkable characteristics is its tendency to produce its new rosettes mainly from the base of the foot, rather than directly on the main stem.

Even if shoots on the stem can sometimes appear, this behavior is strongly reminiscent of its botanical heritage.

When temperatures increase, particularly above approximately 25 °C, ‘Zeus’ can quickly enter a summer dormant period.

During this phase:

the rosette slows down or stops its growth;
the heart of the rosette may tend to flatten;
the leaves can be tightened to limit water loss.

This behavior is natural and constitutes an adaptation to the hot and dry conditions of its native environment.

Culture and behavior

The Aeonium ‘Zeus’ is a vigorous cultivar and relatively easy to grow.

Its main horticultural characteristics:

Growth: vigorous;
Adult size: large (often more than one meter);
Rooting of cuttings: very easy;
Ability to reject: good, mainly from the base;
Fragility: no particular sensitivity observed apart from a lower tolerance to excessive temperatures and afternoon sunlight. Particular attention should therefore be paid during hot summer periods.

Like all Aeoniums, however, it remains sensitive to frost and prolonged negative temperatures.

A variation: ‘Zeus Yellow’

There is also a form called Aeonium ‘Zeus Yellow’.

This variation has more yellow hues, closer to the appearance of the Aeonium ‘Poseidon’. However, it remains considered a distinct form and should not be confused with the ‘Zeus’
