Botanical description
Aeonium ‘Voodoo White‘ and ‘Voodoo Ultra White‘ are shrubby variegated Aeoniums derived from a mutation of Aeonium ‘Voodoo‘. They belong to a particularly sought-after lineage known for its large rosettes, majestic habit and strongly contrasting foliage.
These two cultivars are morphologically very similar and are distinguished mainly by the intensity and purity of their white variegation.
Like other Aeoniums derived from ‘Voodoo‘, their growth is directed towards the development of a massive trunk generally bearing a single large rosette.
Spectacular foliage with extreme contrasts
In winter, when light levels are lower, the foliage displays a characteristic structure consisting of:
- broad, long and thick leaves;
- a broad green central band;
- narrow cream-white lateral bands;
- leaf margins that may develop pink to red tones.
This pattern creates a particularly striking contrast between the green chlorophyll-bearing section and the pigment-free areas.
The impressive size of its leaves and its rosette, which can reach approximately 35 cm in diameter, further enhance its spectacular appearance.
Stronger coloration in bright light
As light levels increase, together with higher temperatures or mild water stress, Aeonium ‘Voodoo White‘ and ‘Voodoo Ultra White‘ express their colors more strongly.
The leaf margins gradually change:
- from pale pink;
- to deeper pink;
- and eventually red, depending on light intensity.
This peripheral coloration contrasts strongly with the white and green areas of the foliage.
Unlike some more colorful mutations, however, these Aeoniums generally retain an elegant predominantly white appearance, which is their defining characteristic.
The difference between ‘Voodoo White‘ and ‘Voodoo Ultra White‘
Two closely related forms are in fact marketed under the names ‘Voodoo White‘ and ‘Voodoo Ultra White‘.
The main difference concerns the purity of the white variegation:
Aeonium ‘Voodoo White‘
- The white lateral bands may contain a few green areas or small green spots;
- The proportion of chlorophyll is slightly higher.
Aeonium ‘Voodoo Ultra White‘
- The lateral bands are a much purer and more uniform white;
- Stray green areas are generally absent;
- Its appearance is brighter and more spectacular.
This ultra-white form is therefore especially sought after by collectors, but it is also more demanding in cultivation because of its low chlorophyll content.

Cultivation and behavior
Like most Aeoniums in the ‘Voodoo‘ lineage, these cultivars grow vigorously but have limited propagation ability.
Their main horticultural characteristics are:
- Growth: fairly active;
- Offset production: low;
- Vigor: good under suitable conditions;
- Vulnerability: increased sensitivity during summer.
Their low chlorophyll content, especially in ‘Voodoo Ultra White‘, requires particular attention to avoid excessive weakening.
During hot periods, they should ideally be provided with:
- a bright position protected from scorching sun;
- a cooler environment;
- good air circulation;
- a very free-draining growing medium.
Like all Aeoniums, they also remain sensitive to frost and sub-zero temperatures.

COMPARISON BETWEEN VOODOO ULTRA WHITE AND VOODOO FLAME

All the leaves of ‘Voodoo Flame‘ are concave, like a spoon, while those of ‘Voodoo Ultra White‘ are smooth.
This is precisely why the overall shape of ‘Voodoo Flame‘ is so distinctive. Whether the plant is actively growing or dormant, all its leaves point upwards.
The colors of ‘Voodoo Flame‘ and ‘Voodoo Ultra White‘ are different. ‘Voodoo Flame‘ is bright yellow, whereas ‘Voodoo Ultra White‘ is white. During active growth, ‘Voodoo Ultra White‘ becomes increasingly green, unlike ‘Voodoo Flame‘, which retains its colors.
