× Semponium by Surreal Succulents: Revolutionary Hybrids Between Aeonium and Sempervivum?

Semponium Sienna

When they were unveiled in 2021, × Semponium generated enormous interest in the succulent world. Developed by the British nursery Surreal Succulents, these intergeneric hybrids were presented as the result of an unprecedented cross between the genera Aeonium and Sempervivum. The announcement immediately captivated collectors—but also fueled considerable debate within the botanical community.

An unprecedented horticultural ambition

Surreal Succulents set itself a particularly ambitious goal: to combine the architectural elegance of Aeonium with the remarkable cold tolerance of Sempervivum in a single plant. The nursery coined the name × Semponium for these new hybrids, in accordance with the horticultural nomenclature used for intergeneric crosses.

Several years after their introduction, the horticultural picture is relatively clear. × Semponium do indeed display a silhouette, growth habit and appearance very close to those of Aeonium. However, observations by numerous growers indicate that the advertised frost resistance does not appear to have been inherited to any significant degree. Under comparable winter conditions, these hybrids show hardiness similar to that of Aeoniums and require protection from severe frost.

An origin that continues to fuel debate

Since their commercial release, some specialists and collectors have questioned the exact nature of these hybrids. Because crosses between the genera Aeonium and Sempervivum are considered extremely complex from a botanical standpoint, some observers question whether a genuine intergeneric hybrid between these two genera is even possible.

To date, no scientific publication has definitively confirmed or disproved the genetic origin of × Semponium. The debate therefore remains open.

At Variegated Aeonium, we do not intend to take sides in this discussion. Whatever their precise origin, these cultivars display original morphological characteristics and now occupy a distinctive place in the world of collectible succulents. As such, they fully deserve inclusion in our database.

The creation process according to Surreal Succulents

Surreal Succulents states that it developed the first × Semponium from a cross between Aeonium ‘Ice Warrior’ and Sempervivum ‘Green Ice’.

The main difficulty was the natural difference in flowering periods. Aeoniums generally bloom in late winter or spring, whereas Sempervivums flower several months later, in midsummer. To make the cross possible, the growers say they artificially delayed the flowering of Aeonium ‘Ice Warrior’ by keeping it in a cooler, shaded environment.

When the two plants finally flowered at the same time, pollen from the Aeonium was manually transferred to the flowers of Sempervivum ‘Green Ice’ using a fine brush and tweezers.

After several weeks of seed maturation and subsequent germination, the first seedlings reportedly revealed a wide diversity of forms, colors and growth habits. According to Surreal Succulents, this variability was the first indication that the cross had succeeded.

After several months of cultivation and selection, six cultivars were ultimately retained for their ornamental and commercial interest.

The different × Semponium cultivars

× Semponium ‘Sienna’ (2021)

The first cultivar in the series to be marketed, ‘Sienna’ is presented as a cross between Aeonium ‘Ice Warrior’ and Sempervivum ‘Green Ice’.

Its rosette develops an intense red coloration under sun or water stress, before returning to green tinged with purple during autumn and winter.

Size: approximately 30 cm tall and 30 cm in diameter.

× Semponium ‘Destiny’ (2022)

Released in 2022, ‘Destiny’ is probably the most spectacular cultivar of the first generation.

Its thick leaves display a particularly pronounced network of veins. Green during the growing season, it gradually develops purple and then almost black tones when grown in full sun. Unlike many Aeoniums, it retains a dark coloration for much of the year.

Its main drawback is its tendency to flower at a relatively young age, sometimes before producing offsets, which can limit propagation.

Size: the rosette can reach approximately 40 cm in diameter.

× Semponium ‘Diamond’ (2022)

Its name refers to the highly geometric shape of its rosettes and its pointed, diamond-like leaves.

Its lemon-green foliage is highlighted by a striking red margin under very bright exposure.

The plant reaches approximately 35 cm in diameter and gradually produces several basal offsets.

× Semponium ‘Vortex’ (2024)

Introduced in 2024, ‘Vortex’ is chiefly distinguished by its substantial size, with a rosette capable of exceeding 50 cm in diameter.

Still relatively recent, it remains poorly documented and its long-term behavior requires further observation.

× Semponium ‘Mrs Frosty’ (2024)

Named in honor of the wife of well-known British presenter Adam Frost, ‘Mrs Frosty’ is a particularly vigorous cultivar.

Its long, spoon-shaped leaves display small brown speckles and change from green to pinkish brown under strong light.

It grows rapidly and produces numerous offsets.

Size: up to 60 cm tall and approximately 40 cm wide.

× Semponium ‘Halo’ (2024)

The name ‘Halo’ refers to the fine white edge that appears on the leaves when they are grown under strong light.

Its clumping growth habit is more reminiscent of a Sempervivum, while the elongated shape of its foliage clearly recalls an Aeonium.

× Semponium ‘Darwin’ (2025)

Released on April 11, 2025, ‘Darwin’ marks an important stage in the history of × Semponium. It is the first cultivar announced as deriving from a cross other than the combination Aeonium ‘Ice Warrior’ × Sempervivum ‘Green Ice’.

According to Surreal Succulents, it is the result of a cross between Aeonium nobile and Sempervivum ‘Pink Puff’.

Its name pays tribute to the dog of Daniel Michael, who created the cultivar.

Compact in habit, ‘Darwin’ develops a rich burgundy-red coloration. According to Daniel Michael, this pigmentation was inherited from Sempervivum ‘Pink Puff’ and represents a first in the creation of an Aeonium-type hybrid without relying on the influence of the iconic Aeonium ‘Schwarzkopf’.

Its introduction confirms Surreal Succulents’ intention to continue developing this new generation of hybrids, which still inspires as much enthusiasm as questioning within the collector community.
