A mutation of Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’, also widely known as Aeonium ‘Halloween’.
Known names:
‘Halloween Moonlight’ (the most widely used name), ‘Jinghua Shuiyue’, ‘Jinghuashuiyue’, 镜花水月 (Jìnghuā Shuǐyuè), ‘Mirror Flower Water Moon’, ‘Water Moon’, ‘Moon Shadow’ and ‘Mirror Flower Moon’. The Chinese name literally means “flower in the mirror, moon in the water”.
⚠️ The shortened name ‘Moonlight’ is sometimes encountered but is best avoided, as it already refers to a distinct white mutation of Aeonium ‘Morticia’.

Reported in 2025 and probably created or selected in China. Its creator, precise place of origin and first marketing date remain unknown.
Botanical description
Aeonium ‘Halloween Moonlight’ is a shrubby variegated Aeonium arising as a mutation of Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’.
It forms relatively compact rosettes of fairly broad, thick and rounded leaves, producing a softer and less graphic appearance than some other mutations in the ‘Halloween’ lineage.
Its variegation is particularly interesting because of the way it changes throughout the year.
During winter
Under lower light levels, the leaves generally display:
- a green central area;
- irregular mottling within this central area;
- broad cream-white lateral bands;
- a relatively broad, rounded leaf shape.
The variegation may be strongly contrasted during active growth. Older leaves can show a different colour distribution, as is common among variegated Aeoniums.
Colour changes with increasing light
One of the main attractions of ‘Halloween Moonlight’ is its ability to change colour gradually according to light intensity.
As light levels rise, the cream lateral bands begin to turn pink, usually from the leaf margins. This pigmentation may progressively spread across all the variegated tissue and develop purple-pink tones.
The central area generally remains green, unlike some other ‘Madeira Rose’ mutations whose centre can become dark brown or almost black. This is a useful identifying feature.
A comparatively subtle variegation
Its appeal lies in the elegance of its foliage and the progressive contrast from green → cream → pink → purple-pink. This softer palette gives it a different appearance from cultivars selected mainly for very dark colouring.
Growth and offset production
Early observations indicate a medium growth rate and an average capacity to produce offsets. These assessments remain provisional because the cultivar is very recent and still uncommon.
Growth is concentrated during periods of moderate temperature. Strong summer heat may cause a slowdown or dormancy without necessarily indicating a problem.
Sensitivity and cultivation
Initial observations do not suggest exceptional fragility compared with other variegated forms derived from ‘Madeira Rose’, although several mutations in this lineage are considered more delicate than especially vigorous cultivars.
☀️ Light
Bright light is important for maintaining clear variegation and encouraging pink pigmentation. Protection is nevertheless preferable under very intense sun, especially during hot periods.
💧 Watering
Excellent drainage is essential. A free-draining growing medium limits the risks associated with excess moisture, particularly when temperatures are high and the plant has slowed its activity.
❄️ Temperatures
Cold tolerance is limited. Like other Aeoniums, ‘Halloween Moonlight’ must be protected from frost.
