Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’: Origin and Lineage of Variegated Forms

Aeonium Madeira Rose

Among the major modern lineages of Aeonium variegata, some hold a special place due to their ability to produce spectacular mutations. This is the case for Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’, a relatively recent hybrid that has quickly won over collectors thanks to its exceptional growth habit, remarkable vigor, and incredible mutation potential.

Today, the variegated forms derived from ‘Madeira Rose’ are among the most sought-after Aeonium varieties. They combine the natural beauty of the original hybrid with the unpredictable diversity of variegated mutations.

In this article, we will list the various variegata cultivars derived from mutations of Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’.

As always with Aeonium variegata, new mutations appear regularly in private collections and among specialist growers. This list is therefore subject to change. Please feel free to share your observations, photographs, or new names to help enrich this database.

Before exploring its various mutations, it is essential to look back at the history and characteristics of this remarkable hybrid.

Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’: a modern hybrid with exceptional potential

Origin and creation

Unlike some historic varieties whose lineage is sometimes uncertain, the origin of Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’ is officially documented thanks to its US horticultural patent, PP29,567.

This hybrid was created by Renée O’Connell in the United States as part of a horticultural breeding program.

The cross that produced this variety is: Aeonium Zwartkop x canariense (Aeonium hybrid ‘BB II’ × Aeonium hybrid ‘Coronado Lime’).

The plant was selected in April 2013 from a population of seedlings resulting from a cross made in March 2012. Initial vegetative propagation via offsets began in 2013 to verify the cultivar’s stability.

Creation date and creator

Creation: March 2012 by Renée O’Connell (United States)

The variety was subsequently patented in the United States under the name: Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’ – US Plant Patent PP29,567 (issued July 31, 2018)

Known names

  • Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’ : official name.
  • ‘Halloween’ : name used primarily in Asian markets, particularly in China.

The name « Halloween » is now widely used among Asian collectors, but the official horticultural name remains Madeira Rose.

Botanical description of Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’

Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’ is a hybrid notable for its distinctive structure.

Its main appeal lies in its exceptional ability to produce numerous offsets arranged in successive rings around the mother plant. This concentric growth pattern gives it a highly structured, spectacular, and almost sculptural appearance.

The plant quickly forms a dense clump composed of numerous rosettes perfectly arranged around a sturdy central stem.

Habit and growth

Unlike many Aeoniums that produce only a few scattered branches, ‘Madeira Rose’ naturally develops:

  • a compact growth habit;
  • strong branching capability;
  • multiple successive tiers of offsets;
  • a balanced and harmonious silhouette.

This characteristic is one of the main reasons for its success among growers and collectors.

At maturity, it can reach approximately:

  • 30 to 40 cm in height ;
  • 60 to 75 cm in width depending on growing conditions.

Foliage that reveals its full potential in the sun

The full expression of ‘Madeira Rose’ appears when the plant receives plenty of light.

Its foliage naturally displays tones of:

  • olive green;
  • grayish-green;
  • bronze;
  • copper.

In bright light, the leaf tips gradually take on coppery to pinkish hues, giving the plant its characteristic appearance.

Like many colorful Aeoniums, its appearance varies significantly depending on:

  • the season;
  • light intensity;
  • temperatures;
  • the level of water stress.

It is generally at its most spectacular during spring and summer.
