Unlike some historic varieties whose lineage is sometimes uncertain, the origin of Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’ is officially documented thanks to its US horticultural patent, PP29,567.
This hybrid was created by Renée O’Connell in the United States as part of a horticultural breeding program.
The cross that produced this variety is: Aeonium Zwartkop x canariense (Aeonium hybrid ‘BB II’ × Aeonium hybrid ‘Coronado Lime’).
The plant was selected in April 2013 from a population of seedlings resulting from a cross made in March 2012. Initial vegetative propagation via offsets began in 2013 to verify the cultivar’s stability.

Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’ is a hybrid notable for its distinctive structure.
Its main appeal lies in its exceptional ability to produce numerous offsets arranged in successive rings around the mother plant. This concentric growth pattern gives it a highly structured, spectacular, and almost sculptural appearance.
The plant quickly forms a dense clump composed of numerous rosettes perfectly arranged around a sturdy central stem.
Habit and growth
Unlike many Aeoniums that produce only a few scattered branches, ‘Madeira Rose’ naturally develops:

- multiple successive tiers of offsets;

At maturity, it can reach approximately:

The full expression of ‘Madeira Rose’ appears when the plant receives plenty of light.

Note: Do not confuse Aeonium ‘Nereus’ / 海神 with Aeonium ‘Neptune’ / 海王. Both cultivars are offered separately in Chinese catalogs, even though their names share a similar marine meaning.
LITCHI
Known names:
‘Litchi’ — primary recommended spelling in French; ‘Lychee’, 荔枝 (Lìzhī) and ‘Litchi Variegated’.

Commercialization likely began in 2024. First dated public record found: March 2024. Creator unknown.
Mutation of ‘Qingcheng’.
Known names:
‘Peacock Feather’ — most widely used international name; ‘Peacock Plume’, ‘Peacock Feathers’, and 孔雀翎 (Kǒngquè líng, « peacock feather »). The name 花翎 (Huālíng) appears in the first Chinese publication found, but its status as a synonym remains to be confirmed.
Date of creation / commercialization: First appearance found on December 14, 2023, in China, under the name 孔雀翎. The English name ‘Peacock Feather’ is attested by November 28, 2024, at the latest. Creator unknown.
Mutation of ‘Litchi’
HALLOWEEN YELLOW
Known names: ‘Halloween Yellow’ — primary international name —, ‘Halloween Yellow Variegated’, ‘Halloween Yellow Variegata’, ‘Esther’, 万圣节黄锦 (Wànshèngjié Huángjǐn) and 万黄锦 (Wàn Huángjǐn). The Chinese name means « Halloween with yellow variegation ».
Date of creation / commercialization: Creator and exact date unknown. The cultivar was already being grown in China and photographed under the name 万圣节黄锦 on March 16, 2021. It therefore appeared earlier, likely in 2020 or early 2021. Its commercialization in Europe is documented as of May 15, 2022, at the latest.
Known names: ‘Lin Lang’ — the most widely used international name; ‘Linlang’, 琳琅. A dark form or selection is also mentioned under the names ‘Black Linlang’, 黑琳琅 and likely ‘Halloween Dark’.

It is similar to Lin Lang but appears distinct due to a slightly broader color palette—somewhat less orange and, at times, more yellow.
Known names: ‘ Candy Chocolate ’ (most common name); ‘Halloween Candy Chocolate’, ‘Halloween Chocolate’, ‘Chocolate Halloween’, and ‘Halloween Chocolate Variegated’.
Also found under the names ‘Chocolate Beauty’ and ‘Colorful Halloween’, but these two names are ambiguous and may refer to other selections.

HALLOWEEN MOONLIGHT / MOON SHADOW
Known names: ‘Halloween Moonlight’‘ (most common name), Jinghua Shuiyue’, ‘Jinghuashuiyue’, 镜花水月 (Jìnghuā Shuǐyuè), ‘Halloween Moonlight’, ‘Mirror Flower Water Moon’ , ‘ Water Moon‘, ‘ Moon Shadow‘ and ‘Mirror Flower Moon’. The Chinese name literally means « flower in the mirror, moon in the water. » The abbreviated name ‘Moonlight’ may be encountered, but it is not recommended because it already refers to a distinct white mutation derived from Aeonium ‘Morticia’.
