Variegated Aeoniums resulting from mutations of ‘Zwartkin’ constitute a particularly interesting group, but also one that is quite complex to document. Over the years, several mutations have appeared, sometimes under different names depending on the country, the producers, or the marketing channels.
The aim of this article is therefore to draw up as complete a list as possible of the Aeoniums variegata attributed to ‘Zwartkin’ , trying to distinguish the different cultivars and to highlight any possible confusions in nomenclature.
As new mutations appear regularly, this list is naturally subject to change. If you know of an Aeonium variegata derived from ‘Zwartkin’ that is not yet included, or if you have information that could clarify the origin, name, or distribution of a cultivar, please do not hesitate to contact us. Observations and accounts from collectors are particularly valuable in trying to reconstruct the history of these plants.
Before we look at the different variegata forms, however, it seems important to briefly revisit ‘Zwartkin’ , the plant from which they originate.
AEONIUM ‘ZWARTKIN’
ORIGIN: Aeonium resulting from the hybridization between Aeonium tabuliforme and Aeonium ‘Zwartkop’ . ‘Zwartkin’ is considered the sibling of Aeonium ‘Garnet’ and Aeonium ‘Jack Catlin’ .
KNOWN NAMES: ‘Zwartkin’ , 黑铜壶 ( Hei Tong Hu / » Black Copper Pot « )
DATE OF CREATION / CREATOR: 1987, by Jack Catlin (United States) .
‘Zwartkin’ is an Aeonium that is particularly interesting for its colour. Its rosettes retain a very dark hue for much of the year, with a significantly less pronounced tendency to turn green than in many other cultivars derived from ‘Zwartkop’ .
Its growth is relatively slow, and the plant generally reaches 40 to 50 cm in height . These characteristics, combined with its dark foliage, make it an easily identifiable cultivar when grown in good light conditions.

A NOMENCLATURE TO BE TAKEN WITH CAUTION
However, identifying the mutations of ‘Zwartkin’ requires a certain amount of caution.
