Origin:
Chinese variegated cultivar that appeared before October 2024. It is likely derived from a mutation of Aeonium ‘ Glaze ‘ , or possibly a related form such as ‘ Fluorescent ‘ . Some sellers also report an origin in the Aeonium ‘ Shaohua ‘ family , but no primary Chinese source currently confirms either of these lineages.
Known names:
‘ Zhi Fou ‘ (most common name), ‘ Zhifou ‘, ‘ ZhiFou ‘,知否( Zhīfǒu ),知否法师,知否法师锦, ‘ Ultra ‘, ‘ Ultra Zhifou ‘, ‘ Zhifou Ultra ‘ and ‘ Chiffon ‘. The Chinese name means “Do you know?” » or “Do you know or not? « .
Date of creation / Creator:
Creator, original greenhouse, and exact date of selection unknown. The earliest precisely dated public publication found is from October 17, 2024. A sale under the Chinese name知否法師is documented in Taiwan on November 30, 2024. Its international distribution expanded significantly the following year.
Botanical description
Aeonium ‘Zhi Fou’ is a very recent variegated ( variegata ) cultivar which probably belongs to the lineage derived from Aeonium ‘Green Cashmere‘ .
It is distinguished by a particularly rare combination of characteristics: an elegant variegation combined with an exceptional ability to produce areas of intense, sometimes spectacular, pink coloration.
In winter conditions or when light is moderate, its foliage has a compound structure:
- with a thin central band of yellow to cream-yellow;
- numerous irregular green streaks;
- large green lateral areas.
This organization is reminiscent of certain characteristics observed in ‘Glaze’ , to which it seems to be genetically close.
Under greater light, the tips of the leaves can gradually develop burgundy to purple streaks, giving more contrast to the rosette.
The exceptional characteristic of ‘Zhi Fou’: the appearance of pink areas
The true originality of Aeonium ‘Zhi Fou’ lies in its ability to spontaneously produce pink areas on its foliage.
These colorations appear randomly and can affect:
- a few isolated leaves;
- certaines zones de la rosette ;
- voire parfois la totalité de la rosette.
This development is reminiscent of the phenomenon known as the “Poker Face” mutation, observed in certain Aeoniums that are capable of producing strongly colored sectors or areas lacking chlorophyll.
However, ‘Zhi Fou’ appears to have a particularly strong tendency to develop this type of coloration, more pronounced than in many other cultivars.
This behavior is notably reminiscent of what can be observed in certain Aeoniums such as ‘Pink Daisy’ / ‘Glowworm’.
This ability to transform a typical rosette into an entirely pink one is probably the main horticultural attraction of this cultivar.
A Spectacular but Still Mysterious Mutation
The title of this article, “Fatal Beauty or Fleeting Mirage?”, refers to a fundamental question surrounding this cultivar: the stability of its pink coloration.
CLike many intensely colored mutations, it is still difficult to determine whether:
- the pink coloration remains stable over time;
- it appears only under certain conditions;
- it can disappear and then return depending on the season;
- it can be reliably maintained through propagation.
Early feedback from collectors is encouraging, but several years of observation will be necessary before the true behavior of this mutation can be fully understood.
The Green Form: Aeonium ‘Know’
When Aeonium ‘Zhi Fou’ loses its pink coloration and reverts to a more typical green form, it may be marketed under the name:
Aeonium ‘Know’
This phenomenon is reminiscent of relationships observed between certain cultivars, such as:
- Aeonium ‘Meteor’ and Aeonium ‘Glowworm’.
This difference in naming illustrates the difficulty of classifying unstable mutations in Aeoniums, where the same plant may display several distinct visual expressions depending on its mutational state.
Cultivation and Growth Habit
Early observations indicate that Aeonium ‘Zhi Fou’ has a relatively active growth rate.
Its natural ability to produce offsets also appears to be good, making it easier to propagate and distribute among collectors.
No particular weakness has been reported to date. However, as with many recently introduced variegated Aeoniums, particular care is still recommended during:
- periods of intense summer heat;
- prolonged periods of water stress;
- transitions between active growth and dormancy.
Good light exposure appears to be essential for maintaining optimal color expression.
One of the Most Intriguing Aeoniums of the New Chinese Generation
Aeonium ‘Zhi Fou’ is one of those new cultivars that show the current evolution of Aeonium selection: seeking not only stable variegation, but also genetic behaviors capable of producing spectacular transformations.
Its appeal lies in:
- its probable origin in a prestigious lineage ( Green Cashmere → Maybach → Glaze );
- its fine and elegant variegation;
- its exceptional potential to produce pink rosettes;
- Its unpredictable nature is what makes it so charming.
It remains to be seen whether this pink beauty will become a lasting characteristic or simply a temporary phenomenon linked to a still unstable mutation.
The coming years will certainly provide an answer to this question.
