Known names:
‘Night Banquet’ — the most widely used international name —; 夜宴 (Yèyàn, “Night Banquet”), ‘Evening Banquet’, 粉花妖 (Fěn huāyāo, “Pink Flower Devil”), and ‘Pink Flower Devil’.
Creation date / breeder:
Documented in the trade in 2024, probably in China. The earliest precisely dated public mention found is November 30, 2024, in a Taiwanese listing offering the plant under the name 夜宴法師錦. Breeder unknown.
Botanical description
Aeonium ‘Night Banquet’ is a variegated shrubby Aeonium from the Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’ (‘Halloween’) lineage.
This recent cultivar therefore belongs to a family of aeoniums known for pronounced color changes, in which chlorophyll distribution and light intensity play a major role in the appearance of the foliage.
Still uncommon in international collections, ‘Night Banquet’ requires further observation to confirm the stability of its characteristics and its long-term behavior.
Pronounced seasonal color changes
In winter, when light levels are lower, Aeonium ‘Night Banquet’ displays relatively restrained foliage composed of:
- a broad green central band;
- cream-yellow lateral bands.
This winter appearance recalls certain other cultivars from the ‘Halloween’ lineage, with bright, clearly structured variegation.
As light intensity increases, particularly in spring and summer, the foliage gradually reveals a much richer range of colors.
The lateral bands then shift successively toward:
- pink shades;
- orange tones;
- and red coloration when conditions are especially favorable.
At the same time, the green central area of the leaf gradually darkens, sometimes becoming a very deep brown.
This contrast between the colored margins and the dark center of the leaf is the principal visual signature of Aeonium ‘Night Banquet’.
Cultivation and behavior
Initial observations indicate that Aeonium ‘Night Banquet’ is a relatively vigorous cultivar.
Its main horticultural characteristics are:
- Growth: fairly fast;
- Offset production: moderate;
- General vigor: good;
- Sensitivity: no particular weakness observed to date.
As with many aeoniums from the ‘Halloween’ lineage, particular attention should nevertheless be paid to summer conditions, especially during periods of high heat and humidity, to assess its long-term behavior.
Its recent introduction into collections does not yet provide enough experience to establish a complete assessment of its stability, resistance, or changes with age.
A new member of the ‘Halloween’ family
Aeonium ‘Night Banquet’ illustrates the growing interest in modern mutations derived from ‘Madeira Rose’.
Its main features include:
- elegant variegation during winter;
- a pronounced transformation as light levels increase;
- an unusual combination of pink, orange, red, and brown;
- and reportedly vigorous growth.
Still new in the world of variegated aeoniums, it will need to be followed over the coming years to determine its place among cultivars in this lineage.
