Probably a mutation of Aeonium ‘Love in the Fallen City’ (‘Qingcheng’), itself a mutation of Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’, also known as ‘Halloween’.

Botanical description
Aeonium ‘Lotus Seat’ is a variegated shrubby Aeonium belonging to the broad lineage derived from Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’ (‘Halloween’). This family includes many recent cultivars with highly changeable foliage capable of developing strong color contrasts depending on the season and growing conditions.
Still relatively new in collections, ‘Lotus Seat’ remains poorly documented, and its exact origin will need to be confirmed through future observations and comparisons with related cultivars.
Seasonal changes typical of the ‘Halloween’ lineage
In winter, when light levels are lower, the foliage displays variegation typical of this lineage:
- a green central band marked with fine streaks and marbling;
- cream-white to pale yellow lateral areas.
This combination gives the plant a bright, delicate appearance, especially during active growth.
As light and temperatures increase and mild water stress develops, protective pigments gradually appear.
The lateral margins then shift toward:
- pale pink at first;
- deeper pink;
- and finally red under stronger exposure.
At the same time, the green central area gradually darkens to chocolate brown or very dark brown, creating a pronounced contrast between the pale and strongly pigmented parts of the leaves.
A cultivar with deep colors
The main interest of Aeonium ‘Lotus Seat’ lies in this gradual transformation of the foliage. Like several cultivars from the ‘Halloween’ lineage, it may vary considerably with its growing environment.
The contrast between the winter period, dominated by cream and green tones, and the summer period, when pink, red, and brown shades appear, gives the cultivar an almost metamorphic appearance.
This ability to change appearance with the seasons is one of the principal attractions of modern variegated aeoniums.
Cultivation and behavior
Initial observations indicate that Aeonium ‘Lotus Seat’ performs reasonably well in cultivation.
Its main horticultural characteristics are:
- Growth: moderate;
- Offset production: moderate;
- Vigor: good;
- Sensitivity: no particular weakness observed to date.
Some caution is nevertheless still needed regarding its long-term resilience. As with many variegated aeoniums from the ‘Halloween’ lineage, certain cultivars may prove more delicate during hot, humid summer periods.
A very free-draining growing medium, together with protection from excessive heat and moisture during dormancy, appears preferable.
