Origin still unknown. When first marketed in 2023, Aeonium ‘Platinum’ was initially presented as a mutation of Aeonium ‘Bronze Medal’. The following year, some growers sold it under the name ‘Haworthii variegata’. Subsequent morphological observations, however, tend to rule out both hypotheses, and its genetic origin remains unidentified.

Botanical description
Aeonium ‘Platinum’ is a variegated shrubby Aeonium whose parentage remains unknown.
It is distinguished by particularly elegant foliage, composed of long, narrow, finely pointed leaves that give it a lighter silhouette than many other variegated cultivars.
The variegation is relatively stable and is based on a simple but attractive combination:
- a broad green central band that may sometimes show subtle silvery tones;
- broad cream to ivory margins;
- a fine pink edging that occasionally appears along the leaf margins when growing conditions favor pigmentation.
This slight silvery tone, visible under certain lighting, is probably the origin of the name ‘Platinum’, referring to the cool, metallic sheen of platinum.
Remarkably stable coloration
Unlike many variegated aeoniums whose colors change markedly with the seasons, ‘Platinum’ retains a relatively consistent appearance throughout the year.
Changes in light have little effect on its variegation. The cream margins remain clearly visible, while the central band stays green, sometimes with a slight gray-silver cast.
Under strong light, a subtle pink edging may appear along the leaf margins, adding color without significantly changing the plant’s overall appearance.
Strong offset production
Initial observations indicate:
- Growth: moderate;
- Offset production: high;
- Vigor: excellent;
- Sensitivity: no particular weakness observed to date.
Its strong tendency to produce numerous offsets allows it to develop into a branching plant relatively quickly.
An origin that remains unresolved
Despite its growing popularity among collectors, the origin of Aeonium ‘Platinum’ remains unresolved.
The successive hypotheses linking it first to ‘Bronze Medal’ and then to ‘Haworthii’ now appear poorly compatible with its morphological characteristics. It may therefore derive from another lineage that remains unknown or insufficiently documented.
As new information becomes available, this sheet will be updated to refine its history and classification.
A restrained and elegant cultivar
With its finely outlined foliage, green, cream, and subtly silvery tones, and particularly vigorous growth, Aeonium ‘Platinum’ has an understated elegance that distinguishes it from more colorful cultivars.
Its stable coloration, ease of cultivation, and abundant offset production make it suitable both for collectors and for growers wishing to establish a well-branched specimen relatively quickly.
