Botanical description
Aeonium ‘Reincarnation’ is a recently introduced variegated cultivar derived from a mutation of Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’ (‘Halloween’), a lineage especially rich in mutations with strikingly contrasted foliage.
This cultivar is immediately distinguished by an unusual arrangement of variegation, unlike that of many other cultivars from the same family.
In winter, when light levels are lower, the rosette displays a particularly unusual feature:
- the center of the rosette remains entirely green;
- the oldest leaves develop cream-yellow to bright-yellow lateral margins;
- the center of each leaf remains green, creating a contrast among successive generations of foliage.
This gradual change between young and older leaves gives the plant a highly distinctive appearance, almost as though several expressions of variegation coexist within the same rosette.
Seasonal color development
As light levels increase, especially during periods of active growth, the leaf margins may gradually become tinged with pink.
This coloration adds another visual dimension to the plant, complementing the natural contrast between green and variegated areas.
Like many recent cultivars from the ‘Halloween’ lineage, it may reveal further color changes as more observations become available.
A mutation whose behavior remains to be discovered
Because Aeonium ‘Reincarnation’ is a very recent cultivar, available information about its horticultural behavior remains limited.
There is not yet enough cultivation experience to assess:
- its growth rate;
- its natural ability to produce offsets;
- the stability of its variegation;
- its resilience under difficult summer conditions.
Further observations will be needed to better understand its long-term behavior.
As with other variegated aeoniums from the ‘Madeira Rose’ lineage, good light, a free-draining growing medium, and particular care during intense summer heat will probably be recommended.
Caution: two aeoniums currently bear the name ‘Reincarnation’
An important point concerns this cultivar’s nomenclature.
There is another Aeonium also named ‘Reincarnation’. It too is variegated, but it has different visual characteristics.
This second cultivar appears to be older, with commercial availability observed as early as 2023, but it remains extremely rare or is probably distributed under another name.
These are therefore two distinct variegated aeoniums bearing the same name, which may cause confusion in collections and exchanges among enthusiasts.
Additional information will be added once the origin and exact identity of the other ‘Reincarnation’ can be confirmed.
A mysterious cultivar from the ‘Halloween’ lineage
