Botanical description
Aeonium ‘Phantom Middle’ is a variegated shrubby Aeonium derived from a Middle mutation of Aeonium ‘Phantom’. This mutation changes the usual distribution of variegation: chlorophyll is mainly concentrated in the lateral portions of the leaves, while the center displays a broad variegated band.
From its parent ‘Phantom’ and its ancestor ‘Ice Warrior’, it inherits an imposing habit, a particularly sturdy stem, and very large rosettes.
A giant among Middle mutations
Aeonium ‘Phantom Middle’ is among the largest cultivars in this category.
It can reach 24 to 28 in. (60 to 70 cm) in height, while its rosettes frequently exceed 16 in. (40 cm) in diameter under good growing conditions. Its thick, powerful trunk readily supports this imposing growth.
This vigor gives it a particularly spectacular silhouette that immediately recalls ‘Phantom’.
Bright and remarkably stable variegation
During winter, when light levels are lower, the foliage displays the typical organization of Middle mutations:
- a broad yellow-to-cream central band crossed by fine green streaks;
- two broad green lateral bands;
- a clear contrast between the different color zones of the leaf.
Unlike many variegated Aeoniums whose coloration changes considerably with the seasons, ‘Phantom Middle’ retains a relatively stable appearance throughout the year.
Subtle but elegant seasonal changes
As light, temperatures, and water stress increase, the central band gradually changes. Its cream-yellow tones can shift toward orange, orange-red, and sometimes burgundy in the most exposed plants.
The green areas generally remain well defined, maintaining an attractive contrast in every season.
Under stressful conditions—strong light, heat, or lack of water—the leaves can also develop a slightly wavy appearance inherited from ‘Phantom’ and also observed in some cultivars such as ‘Venus’.
Cultivation and behavior
Aeonium ‘Phantom Middle’ shows excellent vigor. Its main horticultural characteristics are:
- Growth: rapid to active;
- Offset production: good;
- Vigor: high;
- Sensitivity: no particular weakness observed to date.
Early cultivation experience is particularly encouraging and indicates a relatively easy cultivar to grow despite its variegation.
In summer, however, a bright position with light shade during the hottest hours of the day is recommended. Partial shade generally helps preserve foliage quality while limiting risks associated with intense heat.
Like all Aeoniums, it remains sensitive to frost and favors a very free-draining growing medium.
A reference among large Middle Aeoniums
With its majestic habit, enormous rosettes, and remarkably stable coloration, Aeonium ‘Phantom Middle’ already stands out among the most striking Middle mutations.
Its lasting contrast between a bright yellow center and deep green foliage, combined with its strong vigor, makes it particularly attractive to collectors seeking a spectacular, stable, and relatively easy-to-grow Aeonium.
