Botanical description
Aeonium ‘Poseidon Middle’ is a so-called “middle” mutation of Aeonium ‘Poseidon’. This type of mutation changes the distribution of variegation, concentrating most of the chlorophyll-free tissue in the center of the leaf.
Reflecting its undulatum ancestry, ‘Poseidon Middle’ is a particularly imposing Aeonium that can develop a spectacular outline over time and reach about 3.3 ft (1 m) tall, or even more under favorable growing conditions.
Its trunk is relatively thick and supports one or more large rosettes with especially broad leaves.
Broad leaves with distinctive colors
The foliage of ‘Poseidon Middle’ is particularly recognizable.
Each leaf displays:
- a broad golden-yellow central zone streaked with green;
- green lateral margins;
- and a fairly pronounced contrast between the variegated center and the chlorophyll-bearing edges.
Unlike many variegated Aeoniums whose appearance changes substantially with the seasons, ‘Poseidon Middle’ displays relatively stable coloring throughout the year.
The overall color pattern therefore remains fairly consistent, although its intensity may naturally vary with light levels and growing conditions.
Imposing growth inherited from undulatum
The influence of Aeonium undulatum can also be seen in the plant’s overall habit.
With age, ‘Poseidon Middle’ can form a small, tree-like shrub with a massive trunk topped by one or more large rosettes.
The leaves are especially broad and thick. After a cutting is taken, they may temporarily become soft or limp. Although striking, this is generally not a concern: the leaves gradually regain their firmness once the cutting has developed roots.
The cuttings also appear to root readily, making propagation easier.
An Aeonium especially sensitive to summer heat
The main concern with ‘Poseidon Middle’ is its response to high temperatures.
When temperatures remain above about 77°F (25°C), it may enter summer dormancy quickly. The center of the rosette then tends to flatten and growth slows sharply.
In regions with hot summers, it is therefore preferable to provide:
- bright conditions protected from scorching sun;
- a cool, well-ventilated location;
- protection from intense afternoon heat;
- and cautious watering during heat waves.
This sensitivity to heat can make it more challenging to grow in Mediterranean climates or during periods of extreme heat.
Summer dormancy is nevertheless a natural physiological response in Aeoniums and does not necessarily indicate poor health.
A trait inherited from undulatum
Another interesting characteristic is the way it produces new rosettes.
As in its parent Aeonium undulatum, new shoots appear most often at the base of the plant, directly from the foot, rather than along the stem.
Offsets may nevertheless appear on the stem in some situations. This trait distinguishes its growth pattern from that of many shrubby Aeoniums, which naturally branch freely along their trunks.
A spectacular Aeonium that requires care in summer
With its imposing habit, massive trunk, and large green-and-golden-yellow leaves, Aeonium ‘Poseidon Middle’ is one of the most striking middle mutations.
Its stability, ease of rooting, and development potential make it an appealing cultivar for collectors. However, its tendency to enter dormancy quickly in high heat requires particular attention in regions with hot summers.
Its undulatum heritage also gives it a silhouette very different from that of many more compact variegated Aeoniums, making ‘Poseidon Middle’ a distinctive presence in a collection.
