Botanical description
Aeonium ‘Wedding Dress’ is a shrubby variegated Aeonium resulting from a mutation of Aeonium ‘Medusa’. It therefore belongs to the famous lineage derived from ‘Velour’, a group of cultivars especially valued by collectors for their strong color contrasts and spectacular seasonal changes.
This rare cultivar is mainly distinguished by the softness of its tones and its gradual color evolution, giving it a particularly elegant appearance.
A botanical gown in pastel shades
During winter, when light levels are lower, the foliage of Aeonium ‘Wedding Dress’ displays a characteristic variegation pattern:
- a broad green central band, often crossed by fine mottling;
- cream-white lateral areas;
- a colored edge that may gradually develop along the leaf margins.
As light intensity, temperatures and water stress increase, the leaf margins gradually develop pink and then red pigments.
Color generally appears first on the upper part of the leaves before moving toward the center. Under strong light, pink and red tones may become dominant and cover much of the leaf blade.
This seasonal evolution gives the Aeonium a highly changeable appearance, shifting from pale, delicate winter foliage to a much more contrasted plant during periods of intense light.
A distinct identity from ‘Medusa’
Although derived from Aeonium ‘Medusa’, ‘Wedding Dress’ has visual characteristics that make it fairly easy to distinguish from its parent.
The main difference lies in the center of the rosette:
- in ‘Wedding Dress’, the young leaves display soft cream-white and pale-green shades;
- in ‘Medusa’, the growing center is usually yellower and brighter.
The overall coloration is also different:
- ‘Wedding Dress’ develops more pink, pastel and delicate tones;
- ‘Medusa’ tends to develop more intense red shades.
This difference in palette probably explains the choice of a name referring to a wedding dress, evoking the purity and elegance of its softly colored young rosettes.
Cultivation and behavior
Aeonium ‘Wedding Dress’ behaves much like other cultivars from the ‘Velour’ lineage.
Its main horticultural characteristics are:
- Growth: good;
- Branching: good;
- Vigor: good;
- Fragility: no particular sensitivity observed.
Like all Aeoniums, however, it remains sensitive to frost and prolonged sub-zero temperatures.
Strong light is required to obtain its finest colors, but protection from intense summer heat and scorching afternoon sun may be beneficial, especially in regions with very hot summers.
An Aeonium of great aesthetic refinement
Aeonium ‘Wedding Dress’ is one of those cultivars whose appeal lies not only in the intensity of its colors, but also in their subtlety.
Its unique combination of cream white, soft green and pinkish shades makes it a particularly elegant cultivar among modern variegated Aeoniums.
Less dramatic than some cultivars with extreme contrasts, it stands out for a more refined beauty, with an evolution reminiscent of the nuances of delicate fabric rather than the bold colors of many variegated Aeoniums.
