Aeonium ‘Green Wave’

Aeonium ‘Green Wave’

Origin: A mutation of Aeonium ‘Scarlett Ink’ according to a Chinese source. ‘Scarlett Ink’ derives from ‘Ink Painting’, a mutation of ‘Mardi Gras’.

Known names: ‘Green Wave’ — the most widely used international name —, 碧浪, ‘Bilang’, ‘Bi Lang’, ‘Blue Wave’, ‘Jade Wave’, 绿体仙墨法师, ‘Green Xianmo’, ‘The Green Lotus’, and ‘Ariel’.

Creation / commercial history: Documented in the Chinese trade by 2021 at the latest. The earliest detailed description found dates from December 1, 2021. The exact creation date and originator are unknown.

Origin and history

Aeonium ‘Green Wave’ belongs to the lineage of mutations derived from ‘Mardi Gras’. According to a Chinese source, it arose as a mutation of ‘Scarlett Ink’, itself derived from ‘Ink Painting’.

The Chinese name 碧浪, transcribed Bilang or Bi Lang, evokes a “green wave” or “jade wave.” The earliest detailed description currently found dates from December 1, 2021, shortly after the plant had been renamed 碧浪, having previously circulated as the “green form of ‘Xianmo’”.

Botanical description

General description

Aeonium ‘Green Wave’ is a shrubby variegated Aeonium. Its large rosettes bear elongated leaves with a green central band and cream to pale-yellow margins.

The wavy, sometimes twisted shape of the leaves is its main distinguishing feature.

Seasonal changes

In winter, the green center and cream margins predominate. As light levels and temperatures increase, the outer leaves may twist, curve, and curl. The margins may also develop subtle pink tones.

Its overall color palette changes less dramatically than that of several other variegated cultivars, but the leaf shape becomes more pronounced under summer conditions.

Growth and branching

Available observations indicate moderate growth, moderate offset production, and good vigor. Branching contributes to its shrubby habit.

Stability and reversions

A reversion has been observed and photographed. The photographs at the end of this profile document the phenomenon; its frequency is unknown.

Like many descendants of ‘Mardi Gras’, its foliage displays variegation composed of two dominant colors:

  • a broad green central band;
  • cream to pale-yellow lateral margins.

Particular sensitivities

No cultivar-specific sensitivity has been observed to date. However, the pale tissue remains vulnerable to overly rapid acclimation to brighter light.

Flowering

No flowering characteristics specific to Aeonium ‘Green Wave’ have been documented. As with other aeoniums, each rosette is monocarpic.

Growing conditions

☀️ Light

Bright exposure encourages compact growth, contrast, and summer waviness of the leaves. Acclimate the plant gradually to direct sunlight.

💧 Watering

Water according to the plant’s activity and how quickly the pot dries. Reduce watering when heat causes a slowdown, and avoid fixed schedules.

🪨 Potting mix

Use a very free-draining, well-aerated growing medium that allows water to escape quickly.

🌡️ Temperatures

Protect from frost. During intense heat, maintain good ventilation and adjust watering to any slowdown in growth.
