Botanical description

Aeonium ‘Anna’ is a shrubby variegated Aeonium whose exact origin remains uncertain. According to the earliest available observations, it may be a mutation of Aeonium ‘Durango’, but this parentage still requires confirmation through further observation.

This cultivar is distinguished by a characteristic combination of three colors:

green;
cream (off-white with slightly yellowish tones);
red.

This color combination gives it a particularly elegant appearance and recalls certain Aeoniums from colorful-leaved lineages such as ‘Blushing Beauty’.

Foliage with changing colors

At the heart of the rosette, the young leaves generally display predominantly cream and green tones, with the variegation still only lightly expressed.

As they age, the outer leaves gradually develop their characteristic coloration:

a green central band of varying width;
two cream-colored lateral zones that may gradually turn red.

The intensity of this coloration depends strongly on growing conditions, particularly light levels, temperature and water stress.

As light exposure increases, the red pigments become progressively more prominent and may overtake the cream areas. Under favorable conditions, the leaf margins can develop a deep red color, creating a particularly attractive contrast with the green central zone.

A texture inherited from velvety-leaved Aeoniums

Aeonium ‘Anna’ has a slightly downy leaf texture, a characteristic also found in Aeonium ‘Blushing Beauty’.

This velvety surface adds further ornamental interest and enhances the color nuances according to the light.

This characteristic also makes it visually similar to certain cultivars belonging to the same genetic family.

Cultivation and growth behavior

Aeonium ‘Anna’ is a vigorous cultivar that is relatively easy to grow.

Its main horticultural characteristics are:

Growth: fairly fast;
Offset production: good;
Overall vigor: high;
Weaknesses: no particular sensitivity observed.

Its good capacity to produce offsets makes propagation easier and allows new plants to be obtained quickly.

Like all Aeoniums, however, it remains sensitive to frost and prolonged sub-zero temperatures. Winter protection is necessary in regions with cold winters.
