Origin
A mutation of Aeonium ‘Blushing Beauty’. Correction: ‘Loki’ does not derive from Aeonium ‘Verna’; it is a parallel mutation from the same mother plant, contrary to the previously widespread assumption.
Known names
‘Loki’ — the most widespread international name —, ‘Luoshen’, ‘Luo Shen’, 洛神 and 洛神法师. ‘Lord God’ is an incorrect translation.
Creation date / Creator
The mutation appeared spontaneously on a plant grown by Li Wenhua (李文华) on his balcony in Dongtai, Jiangsu Province, China. It was discovered in March 2018 and subsequently propagated vegetatively.
Botanical description
Aeonium ‘Loki’ is a variegated shrub-form cultivar in the ‘Blushing Beauty’ lineage. It combines elegant orange and apricot tones with greater vigour and easier cultivation, while retaining the lineage’s slightly velvety leaf texture.
A palette that evolves with the seasons
During active growth, the leaves show a narrow green central band bordered by broad orange or apricot areas. With stronger light, higher temperatures and water stress, these tones gradually shift to deeper pink and may become bright red in the sunniest periods.
A texture inherited from ‘Blushing Beauty’
Like other cultivars in this lineage, ‘Loki’ has slightly downy, pleasantly textured foliage. This velvety surface reinforces the softness of its pastel colouring and its ornamental appeal.
Cultivation and behaviour
Growth is moderate, offset production is good and vigour is higher than in ‘Verna’. It is regarded as noticeably less fragile, although protection from scorching summer afternoon sun remains advisable. Like all Aeoniums, it must be protected from frost.
A successful development within the lineage
‘Loki’ combines warm colours, velvety foliage and elegance with improved vigour and easier cultivation, making it one of the most successful cultivars in the ‘Blushing Beauty’ lineage.
