Botanical description
Aeonium ‘Buluochun’ is a variegated cultivar derived from a Middle mutation of Aeonium ‘Albovariegatum’. The latter is itself a mutated form of the botanical species Aeonium arboreum.
The term Middle variegation refers to a particular type of variegation in which the area lacking chlorophyll, or displaying a different color, is concentrated mainly in the center of the leaf blade. This contrasts with classic marginal variegation, in which the outer edges are usually the most strongly marked.
This mutation gives it particularly graphic foliage, with a broad yellow-to-creamy-yellow central band surrounded by green lateral areas. This pattern creates a balanced contrast between the differently colored zones of the leaf.
Unlike some variegated cultivars whose colors change greatly with the seasons and light intensity, ‘Buluochun’ has a relatively stable appearance throughout the year. Its variegation remains broadly consistent, with few seasonal changes observed.
Cultivation and behavior
Aeonium ‘Buluochun’ grows in a manner fairly similar to its parent ‘Albovariegatum’, while appearing to show greater overall vigor.
Its growth rate is considered normal for a variegated Aeonium, and its natural ability to produce offsets is also average. Initial observations reveal no particular sensitivity, unlike some specimens of Aeonium ‘Albovariegatum’, which may sometimes be more difficult to grow.
As with most variegated aeoniums, it should nevertheless be given:
- a bright position that helps maintain attractive variegation;
- protection from intense summer heat;
- a free-draining growing medium;
- watering adjusted appropriately during periods of dormancy.
