Botanical description
Aeonium ‘Charm Golden Rose Variegata’ is a variegated Aeonium derived from a mutation of Aeonium ‘Charm Golden Rose’.
It is probably the first identified variegated Aeonium derived from this hybrid, which is still relatively uncommon in collections. Its appearance therefore introduces new genetic diversity among variegated aeoniums outside the classic lineages that currently dominate the market.
This cultivar is immediately distinguished by the unusual leaf shape inherited from its parent, ‘Charm Golden Rose’:
- broad leaves;
- rounded leaf blades;
- a compact, harmonious appearance.
This morphology gives it a different appearance from many more conventional shrubby variegated aeoniums with long, narrow leaves.
A remarkable seasonal color progression
In winter, when light levels are lower, the foliage generally displays variegation consisting of:
- a broad green central band;
- cream-yellow lateral areas.
This combination gives the rosette a bright, balanced appearance.
As light, temperatures, and water stress increase, the Aeonium gradually reveals its full color potential.
The lateral areas then develop warmer tones:
- pink;
- purplish pink;
- red, depending on light intensity.
At the same time, the green center gradually darkens, strengthening the contrast between the different foliage zones.
This progression can give the plant an especially elegant appearance, combining golden, pink, and dark tones.
A new lineage to watch
Because Aeonium ‘Charm Golden Rose Variegata’ is a recent introduction, its long-term behavior remains to be observed.
Several points will need to be clarified over time:
- the stability of its variegation;
- its tolerance of summer conditions;
- its color development in different climates.
Early reports nevertheless indicate that it tends to produce relatively few offsets naturally.
Growing behavior
Available cultivation information remains limited to date.
Initial observations indicate:
- Growth: information remains insufficient;
- Offset production: rather limited;
- Sensitivity: no reliable data to date.
As with all recently introduced variegated aeoniums, a longer observation period will be needed before a precise cultivation profile can be established.
Particular attention should be paid to excess summer moisture and high temperatures, conditions that are often challenging for strongly variegated aeoniums.
A promising variegated Aeonium
Aeonium ‘Charm Golden Rose Variegata’ is an interesting new addition to the world of variegated aeoniums.
Its distinctive character lies in the combination of several features:
- a genetic origin different from traditional variegated lineages;
- unusually broad, rounded leaves;
- a color progression from winter green and cream to purplish-pink summer tones.
Still mysterious and uncommon, it is one of those new cultivars whose full potential will become clearer over the coming years.
