Breeder and exact date of appearance unknown. The cultivar was already being sold by BestAeonium in April 2022.
Botanical description
L’Aeonium ‘Firefox’ is a shrubby variegated Aeonium derived from a mutation of Aeonium ‘Madeira Rose’ (‘Halloween’).
It has fine, irregular stripes of different colors distributed across the foliage. In ‘Firefox’, this feature is enhanced by a particularly intense color palette, making this cultivar one of the most spectacular forms from the ‘Halloween’.
Flamboyant, intensely striped foliage
In winter, when light levels are lower, the rosettes display fine green and cream stripes running across the leaves, while the margins already take on a delicate pink tone.
As light, temperatures, and water stress increase, the coloration changes dramatically. Red pigments gradually spread across the foliage, eventually covering much of the leaves while the characteristic striping remains visible.
This combination of intense red, green, and cream creates a striking contrast that helps explain the cultivar’s appeal among collectors.
Each rosette displays a slightly different pattern, further emphasizing the individuality of each plant.
A cultivar as beautiful as it is delicate
Although Aeonium ‘Firefox’ is considered one of the most beautiful cultivars derived from ‘Halloween’, it is also regarded as one of the most demanding in cultivation.
Available observations indicate greater sensitivity than in most variegated aeoniums from this lineage. This fragility probably appears to be linked to a genetic weakness specific to this mutation.
Careful cultivation is therefore recommended, with a very free-draining growing medium, excellent ventilation, and particular attention to excess moisture, especially during summer.
Cultivation and behavior
L’Aeonium ‘Firefox’ has the following characteristics:
- Growth: rather slow ;
- Offset production: moderate ;
- Fragility: high, greater than in most cultivars derived from ‘Halloween’.
Like all aeoniums, it remains sensitive to frost. Given its natural fragility, it should be protected from extreme weather conditions and excess moisture, which can quickly jeopardize the plant.
A highly sought-after rarity
Because of its relatively slow growth, sensitivity, and sometimes significant losses during propagation, Aeonium ‘Firefox’ remains difficult to produce in quantity.
This limited availability explains why it is rarely offered for sale today.
Its extraordinary color palette and spectacular striping nevertheless make it one of the most remarkable cultivars in the ‘Madeira Rose’.
