Botanical description

Aeonium rubrolineatum variegata ‘V’ is a shrubby variegated Aeonium reported to derive from a mutation of the botanical Aeonium rubrolineatum.

Still sometimes known simply as ‘V’ in collections, this Aeonium has a readily recognizable appearance thanks to the characteristic colored streaks that develop across its foliage.

Aeonium ‘Rubrolineatum Variegata V’

Its distinctive appearance results from an unusual balance between green chlorophyll, creamy-yellow variegation, and red pigments that develop as light intensity increases.

Foliage with characteristic streaks

In winter, when light levels are lower, the foliage displays the classic structure of a variegated Aeonium:

  • a broad green central band;
  • creamy-yellow lateral areas.

The main characteristic of this Aeonium appears progressively as light levels increase.

The yellow areas of the foliage then develop colored streaks that progress through:

  • pink;
  • red;
  • and finally deep burgundy tones.

These streaks, which may also appear within the green center, are the visual signature of Aeonium ‘V’ and make it relatively easy to identify.

A broad green-dominant center

One of the notable features of this Aeonium is the exceptional width of its green central area.

Depending on growing conditions and the individual plant, this band can become extremely dominant and cover much of the leaf, sometimes visually reducing the proportion of creamy-yellow areas.

This characteristic distinguishes it from many other variegated aeoniums in which the pale variegation generally remains more prominent.

The combination of this broad green area and the fine burgundy-red streaks creates a highly distinctive contrast, especially on older leaves.

Cultivation and behavior

Aeonium rubrolineatum variegata ‘V’ is a relatively easy cultivar to grow.

Its main horticultural characteristics are:

  • Growth: moderate;
  • Offset production: fairly limited;
  • Overall vigor: satisfactory;
  • Sensitivity: no particular weakness observed to date.

As with all variegated aeoniums, particular care is nevertheless required under extreme conditions, especially frost and prolonged excess moisture.
