Botanical description

Aeonium ‘Voodoo Green’ is a variegated shrubby Aeonium belonging to the lineage derived from Aeonium ‘Voodoo’. Its exact origin remains to be confirmed, but its morphological traits closely resemble ‘Voodoo Silk’, of which it may be a mutation or a stabilized variation.

This cultivar is distinguished by foliage richer in chlorophyll than that of other variegated ‘Voodoo’ aeoniums, giving it strong vigor and the predominantly green coloration behind its name.

Bright foliage dominated by green

In winter, when light levels are lower, its foliage typically consists of:

  • a broad green central band;
  • narrow creamy-white lateral bands;
  • a leaf margin that may take on a slight pink or red tint.

Compared with ‘Voodoo Silk’, its foliage is generally less strongly marked by white streaks and is organized more clearly around the contrast between a broad green center and pale margins.

This higher proportion of chlorophyll gives it a more vigorous appearance and supports its development.

More restrained coloration than other ‘Voodoo’ cultivars

As light levels increase, especially in spring and summer, the outer leaves may gradually change:

  • the margins develop pink and then red tones;
  • some leaves may darken slightly;
  • the contrast between green and pale areas becomes more pronounced.

Unlike many variegated aeoniums that quickly develop intense colors in strong light, however, ‘Voodoo Green’ retains its predominantly green appearance for a long time.

This is one of its main identification criteria and perfectly explains its name: it naturally appears to maintain green coloration longer than its close relatives.

Cultivation and behavior

Aeonium ‘Voodoo Green’ appears relatively easy to grow.

Its main horticultural characteristics are:

  • Growth: fairly active;
  • Offset production: limited, as in most aeoniums from the ‘Voodoo’ lineage;
  • Vigor: good;
  • Sensitivity: no particular weakness observed to date.

Its chlorophyll-rich foliage probably gives it greater resilience than some more heavily depigmented mutations derived from ‘Voodoo’, such as ‘Voodoo Ultra White’ or ‘Voodoo Red Witch’.

It nevertheless retains the general characteristics of this lineage, notably a tendency to form large rosettes on a massive trunk rather than producing abundant offsets.
