Origin: A mutation of Aeonium ‘Zwartkin’.
Known names: ‘Zwartkin White’ — principal name —, ‘Zwartkin the White’, ‘White Zwartkin’, ‘Zwartkin White Variegated’, ‘Zwartkin White Variegata’, ‘Zwartkin Variegated Form’, ‘Zwartkin Red’, ‘Zwartkin Variegata 1’, ‘Zwartkin Variegated’, 铜壶白 and 黑铜壶白锦.
Creation / commercialization date: Documented in the Chinese trade by 2020 at the latest; exact creation date and originator unknown.
Origin and history
Aeonium ‘Zwartkin White’ is a variegated mutation of ‘Zwartkin’. It retains its parent’s ability to develop very dark pigmentation under strong light, alongside areas without chlorophyll.
The plant is documented in the trade by 2020 at the latest, according to the current project corpus. Its originator and the exact circumstances of its appearance are not documented.
Botanical description
General description
Aeonium ‘Zwartkin White’ is a shrubby variegated Aeonium. Its leaves generally have a green central line, cream-yellow lateral areas and a pink-to-red margin. The rosettes may flatten during summer, like those of its parent ‘Zwartkin’. This characteristic reflects its relationship with Aeonium tabuliforme.
Seasonal changes
In winter or under moderate light, green and cream tones predominate. As light levels and temperatures rise, the pale areas become pink and then red.
In summer, the lateral bands may turn bright red while the green center gradually darkens to almost black. The heart of the rosette generally remains lighter, retaining more green and cream.
Growth and branching
Available observations describe a relatively vigorous cultivar with fairly fast growth and satisfactory branching.
Stability and reversions
No particular frequency of reversion is currently documented. Nevertheless, monitor the appearance of entirely green, dark or highly depigmented shoots to follow the stability of the variegation.
Particular sensitivities
No sensitivity specific to the cultivar has been observed to date. Very pale areas may, however, be more susceptible to sunburn if acclimated to sunlight too quickly.
Flowering
No flowering characteristics specific to Aeonium ‘Zwartkin White’ have been documented. As in other aeoniums, each rosette is monocarpic.
Growing conditions
☀️ Light
Bright exposure encourages red and dark pigments. Acclimate the plant gradually to direct sunlight and protect pale areas during the hottest periods.
💧 Watering
Water according to growth and how quickly the pot dries. Allow the growing medium to dry sufficiently between waterings and reduce watering during the summer slowdown.
🪨 Potting mix
Choose a very free-draining, well-aerated mix that allows water to escape quickly.
🌡️ Temperatures
Protect from frost. During hot weather, provide good ventilation and avoid combining persistently wet growing medium with high temperatures.
